Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio: where to base a week in Corsica?
Two different sides of southern Corsica: how to choose between the surroundings of Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio when planning a week from one house.
Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio can both feature in a visit to southern Corsica. But for a week in one house, choosing your base changes the rhythm of your days. Porto-Vecchio suggests a stay between the old town, marina and nearby beaches. Bonifacio makes a strong impression with its upper town, narrow harbour and cliffs. There is no universal winner: the useful question is where you would like to return most often.
Porto-Vecchio: organise your days around a coastal area
Porto-Vecchio has both an old town and a marina; Palombaggia and Santa Giulia are among the landscapes that draw visitors to its surroundings. When choosing an address, do not group them all into one idea of proximity. A house oriented towards a particular beach will create different routines from a base close to town life.
This area is worth considering if you imagine alternating swimming, some shopping and time back at the house. Ask which beach or coastal area you expect to return to regularly. Crossing your main area every day can take away part of the benefit of staying there.
The old town can be an outing in its own right, without necessarily adding an activity on either side. Think about when you want to explore it and how you will arrive. That is easier than letting the search for a parking space decide the time of dinner for you.

Bonifacio: make room for the upper town and its setting
In Bonifacio, the relationship between the sea, limestone cliffs and upper town gives a stay a distinctive character. If you want to return at different times of day, choose a base that makes those visits enjoyable. A brief visit from elsewhere on the island may not provide the same pleasure as seeing a familiar place in changing light.
The harbour and upper town should not be mistaken for a flat, effortless route. For travellers hoping to limit walking or gradients, examine access and transport options before the stay. A place's closeness on a map is not enough information about its accessibility.
Views of the cliffs can be enjoyed from authorised areas around town and, depending on conditions, on a boat outing. For a route such as Campu Rumanilu, consult official information and local signs. Cliffside walks should not be treated as an activity to improvise for every group.
How central are the beaches to your plans?
If you expect to return several times to Palombaggia or Santa Giulia, use their actual access points when comparing addresses. If Bonifacio's landscapes are the heart of your trip, build the week around them and add one or two beach outings that make sense from your location.
In either case, ask about the walk from parking, the type of access and the facilities you need. A photograph of clear water says little about the day's sea conditions, organising an outing with children or the convenience of the journey home at the end of the day.

A simple way to make the decision as a group
If beaches come first: identify two access points you like, then compare houses from those places.
If evenings in town matter most: examine the return journey and how independently everyone wants to travel.
If the house is the priority: focus on shade, outdoor dining, living spaces and bedroom arrangements.
If exploring is central: map a realistic area for outings before choosing a house, without stacking up long drives.
Keep the week balanced
Spend the first days learning your immediate surroundings. Then set aside a proper day to explore the other town, without imposing a daily return journey. Keep at least one day free and let another outing depend on the weather, people's interests and how much energy everyone has. A good week does not need to prove that you have seen everything.
